2017 Fall Winter Events

JANUARY 7, 2017—ALL ABOARD—GET READY TO RIDE THE RAILS!
Ever wonder about "The Real McCoy"? Hear the story of Elijah McCoy, the son of a former slave, who was fascinated
with machines and became an inventor who improved the rail industry. Join National Museum of Industrial History's
Education Coordinator Kitsa Behringer as she reads All Aboard! Elijah McCoy's Steam Engine and stay a bit longer
for a show-and-tell of artifacts from the Lehigh Valley Railroad. (suggested ages—5 – 8)

JANUARY 21, 2017—BIRTH OF A BOOK—FROM IDEA TO PRINT
Find out if writing a book is in your future! Join Phillipsburg author Pat Brisson and learn how a picture book is made.
Watch and listen as she shows slides and tells stories about two of her books—Benny's Pennies and Before We Eat:
from Farm to Table. Make a bookmark, see her slides, listen to her stories, and have all your questions about writing
answered. (suggested ages—4 – 10)

FEBRUARY 4, 2017—INTRODUCING MADAM PRESIDENT
Author Nichola Gutgold's book Madam President: Five Women Who Paved the Way tells the story of five women who
ran for president to encourage girls (and boys) not to give up—and to try to do things that might be difficult. Based on
research conducted on women and the American presidency, it is an affirmation to children that they can do anything with
hard work and perseverance. It reminds them that women, too, can become president! (suggested ages—6 – 13)

FEBRUARY 18, 2017—GO, TEAM—GO!
Join the Freedom High School cheerleaders as they create a page in their book by writing, illustrating, and sharing a special
cheer "story" for Cops 'n' Kids. Learn chants and movements from these energetic young people—and create your own
pom-pom! (appropriate for children of all ages)

MARCH 4, 2017—RHYMES AND MAGIC WITH MOTHER GOOSE
Join Mother Goose (a.k.a. artist Kim Hogan) as she reads some of her most lovable nursery rhymes. Help Little Bo Peep
come alive by becoming a character in her story. Create your very own Mother Goose to color and take home. (suggested
ages—2 – 6)

MARCH 18, 2017—CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK'S DAY AND DANCE AN IRISH JIG!
Get ready for the "wearing of the green" as we learn a few steps from the fabulous young people from our
community's own O'Grady Quinlan Academy of Irish Dance. Top the morning off in our Demo Kitchen by learning to
make Irish soda scones and decorating mini-cupcakes with Louise McCafferty Kelchner. Join in the fun, be ready to
dance and bake—and remember to wear green! (appropriate for children of all ages)

APRIL 1, 2017—"SPOT THE DOT"—AN ADAPTATION OF MAX LUCADO'S YOU ARE SPECIAL
Interact with the talented Senior Theatre Company from the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts and enjoy their
production of "Spot the Dot"—a creation which they have developed, directed, and designed. This inspiring piece is one
that will encourage children to truly love and accept themselves—a crucial message for us all! (appropriate for children of
all ages)

APRIL 22, 2017—JOIN US AT THE ELEVENTH ANNUAL COPS 'N' KIDS CELEBRATION OF READING . . .
AND THE ARTS AND SCIENCES!
Family fun for all with free books, activities, reading stations, food, and entertainment—don't miss this joyous day. Join us,
once again, as we celebrate the spirit that is Cops 'n' Kids. 11 AM – 3 PM—no registration required
